The Space Between the Notes: The Wisdom of a Jazz Musician

The annual Jazz Festival in New Orleans just finished and it reminded me of a good story from a few years back. My wife and I were enjoying a late night concert in a dimly lit club on Frenchman Street in New Orleans. The kind of place where the air feels like it has been played as much as the instruments. In between a set, an old jazz musician sat next to us at the bar. After complimenting him on his beautiful trumpet playing, he quoted someone I can't remember but the words stayed with me:
