In most school discipline systems, severity is measured in days.

One day.  Three days.  Five days.  Ten days.

The structure feels rational: more serious behavior requires a more serious consequence. But beneath that structure sits an assumption we rarely examine: that increasing the length of suspension increases its effectiveness.
